Andrea Bauer, a first year teacher, is learning the ropes while coping with several personal and professional challenges. She’s a dynamo, with lots of potential. Will that potential be realized at an impoverished school in an urban setting? As the school year unfolds, her victories and defeats tell a story about life as a new teacher. Bea Johnson, a seasoned veteran, decides to mentor Andrea. She lives alone in one of the roughest city neighborhoods. She has a deep understanding of how difficult life can be for the children she serves. However, Bea must risk more than her professional career to support Andrea. Her steadfast beliefs regarding what must be done to improve the chances that a child of poverty can be successful in school may cost her more than she ever anticipated. Dorothy Washington, (Ma’am) an elementary school principal, is an ‘old-hand’ at the job. Over the years, she’s struggled with poverty on a daily basis. She’s coped with poverty’s allies violence, drugs, neglect and ignorance. Through it all, she’s tried to innovate and serve her students as best she can in light of the limited resources available. Now, she has the chance of her career to make her educational dreams possibly come true. Will that happen? Dr. John Handler, a city school superintendent, is waging a battle against the status quo. He is challenged by a growing division on his Board, the impact of failing schools and diminishing budget funds. Many forces line up against him. Will he succumb to the unions’ demands, the political pressures of city hall and the never-ending daily pressures of his office? He will face ethical and moral questions as he seeks to bring his district out of the depths of failure. Over the course of a school year these players will interact while the day-to-day drama of school-life unfolds. Can they make a difference when, too often, they are simply, “Running On Empty.”

This book tells it like it is. Down to earth. Good 'behind the scenes' type of info that non-educators don't even think about... or that educators in different areas of public education don't know. The length makes it look formidable, but it isn't. It's an easy read with short chapters. There are many characters, so it might be a good idea to list their names as you meet them. A good place is on some of the front pages of the book, near where the author has a printed listing of school personnel. It will help you keep the characters straight and will help the next person reading the book as well!Product details

Running on Empty Rick Stein 9780615637969 Books Reviews
I loved stepping into the mindset of this young teacher as she faces the joys, sorrows, frights and challenges of her new position in an urban elementary school.
Her energy and love for teaching is her driving force but the obstacles are many and you find yourself cheering her on as she attempts to overcome them and do what she loves doing. . . . "teaching".
The author masterfully weaves his own philosophies of education into the administrators in the novel. Traditional approaches of education need to be challenged and this novel very fairly
addresses those needs. I highly recommend this novel for any lover of teaching or any reader who loves human passion and drama. Great read !
I was in education in an inner city school district and every aspect of this book was so real. The characters were those from my schools it was so true. There were times I felt like I was reliving incidents from my own experiences.
Mr. Stein captured the real struggles of many different employees within a school system. His real-life experience as a successful educator allowed for accurate portrayals of each character while highlighting the struggles of so many students living in poverty. I look forward to his next novel!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Running on Empty by Rick Stein. Since I am a retired educator I could relate to this novel in so many ways. Even though it is a fictional account of lives in an urban school district there are so many parallels to the suburban district that I was a part of. It was so nice to see teachers portrayed as the hard working individuals that I was lucky to work with during my career. I had a hard time putting this one down!!
For the reader who is not an educator, this novel lends insight into the workings of a school and a school district. It helps delineate why changing an education system takes both time and conviction. For the educator or perspective educator/administrator, this novel reveals the day to day challenges of education that is not taught currently in college classes. It would serve as a great discussion text in a number of undergrad or graduate courses because of its content and readability.
